IPID4all Mobility Funding Research Tandem approved

Visiting tandem Partner: Anne Elevelt, Utrecht University, The Netherlands. Mannheim tandem partner: Tobias Rettig, University of Mannheim, Germany. Anne Elevelt will be joining the SFB884 for Research by beginning of the next Year.

Funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the University of Mannheim has successfully launched the IPID4all program to further promote the internationalization of doctoral education. The program is intended for excellent international graduates who want to pursue a doctoral degree in Mannheim as well as all domestic doctoral candidates who pursue their degrees in structured doctoral programs or individual doctorates. Grant authority is the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). In 2017, the university successfully applied for a second project phase and was granted further funding until June 2019.

From the Mannheim Baroque Palace, the tour heads directly to the centre of the city, into the famous Mannheim squares. From the sprawling “Planken” shopping street, numerous small detours will lead you to impressive monuments and memorials, which tell of the city’s animated and varied history.           Our member Hyeonho Hahms paper proposal, Ideological Sources of the Federal Constitutional Court Legitimacy in Germany, is accepted aswell and placed in the following Created Panel: Public Opinion and supreme Court Legitimacy The meeting will take place in Boston (US) from August 30 - September 2, 2018.

          We are proud to announce the most recent Winner of the Links Lecture Award our member Frauke Kreuter

          Our member Frauke Kreuter Principal Investigator of the Project A8/A9, head of the IAB Statistical Methods group and Professor at the University of Mannheim convinced the award committee with her contribution. She receives the award for adding important links in the progress of official statistics through leadership in education and training and distinguished to the literature on social and economic measurement. The award includes a modest honorarium and travel expenses to present the links Lecture in the Washington, DC, area.

          Our member Jan Höhne recieves a Travel Award for the BigSurv 2018 Conference

          Jan Höhne our postdoctoral researcher is attending the BigSurv 18 Conference in Barcelona, Spain to explore  new statistical frontiers at the intersection of survey science and big data. The BigSurv18 brings together international researchers, practitioners, and experts to address how promising technologies and methodologies for using massive datasets can improve, supplement, or replace data and estimates from complex surveys and censuses. The Conference will take place from October 25-27, 2018.

          Carina Cornesse to present paper at Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM)

          Our own Carina Cornesse (A8) is attending the Joint Statistical Meetings in Vancouver, Canada to present her and Ines Schaurer's paper titled "Mixing Models Versus Providing Internet Equipment: How Do Different Strategies of Including the Offline Population Affect Probability-Based  Online Panel Data Over Time?". The conference will take place from July 28th till August 2nd and Carina Cornesse will be presenting her paper on August 1st.

          Researcher Ashley Amaya visiting to collaborate with Project A8

          Researcher Ashley Amaya from RTI international is currently visiting to collaborate with Project A8. She is collaborating to recreate Likert-Scales for European Social Survey using Data from reddit.

           

          ZEW-Ökonom mit Föderalismus-Preis 2018 ausgezeichnet

          Sebastian Blesse, wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter im Forschungsbereich „Unternehmensbesteuerung und Öffentliche Finanzwirtschaft“ am Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung (ZEW), Mannheim, hat den Preis für Föderalismus- und Regionalforschung 2018 erhalten. Zusammen mit seinem Ko-Autor Felix Rösel von der Dresdner Niederlassung des ifo Instituts wurde Sebastian Blesse für den Beitrag „Was bringen kommunale Gebietsreformen?“ ausgezeichnet, der Ende 2017 in der Fachzeitschrift „Perspektiven der Wirtschaftspolitik“ erschienen ist.

          Nina Wiesehomeier from the IE School of International Relations in Madrid to persent at SFB 884

          Recent research has shown that women politicians are more ethical in public office than men, which might facilitate women’s political advancement in corruption environments.This notion has been examined and researched by Nina Wiesehomeier and her colleagues and the results will be presented and discussed at our seminar series by none other than Nina Wiesehomeier herself on the 28th of May 2018 at 14:00 in B6, 30-32 - Room 310.

          Our member Jan Karem Höhne (GIP) will contribute in a project "Enhancing Survey Data Quality using Paradata" with a Talk about "Re-Examining the Middle Means Typical and the Left an Top Means First Heuristics using Eye-Tracking Methodology" at the University of Göttingen, Germany. The Talk will take place in June 4th 2018.

           

          Our members at the 50th Department Anniversary at the University of Konstanz

          Our members Marc Debus and Thomas Bräuninger (C2) will be part of the 50th Anniversary of the Department of Poltics and Public Administration at the University of Konstanz. Marc Debus will hold a welcoming speech as a representer of the German Political Science Association (GPSA). Thomas Bräuninger will present in the panel discussion. The jubilee takes place at 8th of June, 2018, at the University of Konstanz.

          4th Frankfurt-Heidelberg-Mannheim Development Economics Workshop

          The Frankfurt-Heidelberg-Mannheim (FHM) Workshop in Development Economics brings together junior and senior scholars from Goethe University Frankfurt, the University of Heidelberg and the University of Mannheim for a one day workshop to discuss their work in development economics and development issues more broadly. This year it will take place on April 27, 2018 in Mannheim B6, 30-32.

          Annual ZEW Public Finance Conference

          The Centre for European Economic Research in Mannheim (ZEW) organized together with the SFB 884 the annual ZEW Public Finance Conference on April 23-24, 2018. Focus of this year was the theoretical and empirical research regarding the coordination of fiscal policy in the European Monetary Union.

          ZEW-SFB Public Finance Conference

          The theme of the 2018 conference is fiscal policy coordination in Europe. The keynote lectures of Agnès Bénassy-Quéré (Paris School of Economics) and Martin Hellwig (MPI Bonn) will be centered on this topic. However, the conference includes many contributions of other fields of public economics and political economy.

          Federico Nanni to talk at the University of Mannheim

          On Wednesday, April 11, 2018, our member Federico Nanni (B6, C4) will give a talk on "Results from a Text Scaling Hackathon" at the MZES Mannheim A5, Room - 231 at 12pm.

          In his talk he’ll offer an overview of a shared-task hackathon that took place as part of a research seminar bringing together a variety of experts and young researchers from the fields of political science, natural language processing and computational social science. The task looked at ways to develop novel methods for political text scaling to better quantify political party positions on European integration and Euroscepticism from the transcript of speeches of three legislations of the European Parliament. He will also focus on the potential of hackathons for fostering interdisciplinary collaborations between computer science and the social sciences and the next steps of my research group in this direction.
